Process. -- A proceeding, manner of accomplishing anything. Lat. precedo, to go on. Primarily. -- In the first place. Matter. -- The substance of which bodies are made. Lat. mate'ria. Detected. -- Discovered. Lat. detego, to uncover. Mechanical. -- Belonging to a machine. Lat. machina, an engine. The first and, perhaps, most important necessary of living existence is food. This food is, however, prepared for the use of animals in a particular way: and is made out of particular things : both of which must be known to a certain extent, before much that has afterwards to be studied, can be properly understood. But, before considering the nature of food, there are certain introductory facts which must be glanced at: just as it is always found well, that young children should be taught the alphabet, before they are set to read. The alphabet, in this case, relates to the construction of the bodies of living women and men, and to the nature of the several substances out of which those bodies are formed.
